Pretty neat that they did this "for real," as opposed to using CGI/special effects/etc.

Shame the video on the screen of those monochrome models is color.

Funny how that top trim came unglued in the video....Just imagine what an odd thing it would be to be hit by a piece of 70's Sony TV trim falling from space! I doubt they would have been able to send it up that high while running....Odds are with how cold it is up there multiple adjustments would be thrown way off from the parts being much colder than normal operating conditions and it would not be able to display a usable picture....Imagine the multi-channel DTV RF interference up there!

I'm of the opinion that at least some of it is real. There is a dead giveaway of overlay in post at about 1:51, I think. Straight-on shot, and the TV moves but the image inside doesn't. Oops. But still a great thing.
I was thinking it was a retrofitted LCD panel with a solid state media player driving it, but in a few shots is looks a little spherical, like a CRT. Not looking at a big enough monitor to tell at the moment. They could run a full-on CRT TV off battery for the duration of the flight by tagging them onto the back of the set, or sending power down two of the rigging wires. This would allow for heaters in the unit, too. For the "landing" shot at the end, it might be shot/played backwards, which would require the singer to lip synch backwards (which isn't really that hard), and the drone to fly in, rather than away. Hope they put out a "making of" video. It would be interesting. He should discuss collaboration with the OK GO guys, too. Chip |
