It's mono in itself, although it's possible there were two of them hooked up to a stereo setup. It looks like part of a console, although I don't know of many that would have separate amps in the speaker cabinets, especially from the late 50's... Possibly the speaker cabinet for a TV?

Looks like a big powered speaker.
It looks like it might be a companion piece to another hunk 'o furniture and electronics that looked like that but contained another mono amp AND front end, possibly consisting of a tuner, phono and preamp.
They could buy the other unit and it all they wanted was mono, they were done. If they wanted to upgrade to stereo they would buy what you have. Now, if you had another one like that, they would make one hell of a computer speaker setup.

Do not know what was hooked to it, but so what. Looks like a real winner to me. How does it sound? The last Philco radio/phono set I worked on had a similar built-in p-p amp and it sounded great.
