1980s color portables
So I picked up these in the past few months: 1987 Quasar and 1987 Zenith, both with the remote. They both work fine. I'm not sure if the remote with the Zenith is the original. It works with it, but I think it might be an earlier version of the remote that would have come with that set. (I had an '83 Zenith that used that same remote) While those Zeniths came in several colors, I've only ever seen the white ones with the remote. Anyone ever seen a different color one that had the remote control?

That Zenith cube was made for years in all different feature sets and colors. Remotes were available on all colors. In 1987, the remote probably would have looked like this.
Is that Quasar remote the one that looks like a little TV? Any more pictures of it? |

That remote looks more like what I would expect goes with this Zenith. I wonder if my set has the 'sleep' function. Here's a better picture of the quasar remote.

The local Zenith dealer got stuck with one of those; it sat on the shelf, brand new, gathering dust until the price of FlungDung imports was but a tiny fraction of what he likely paid for it. I haven't been in his store for a few years-could still be there! (He only sells major appliances these days)

My brother has a black version of the Zenith under the Heathkit name. Yes...it was a kit.

The Quasars came out first & you couldnt keep them in stock. Also came in non remote. Zeniths came the next year & sold better due to name
& and CATV RAT tuners. The TOTL set was black with sun screen, AC/DC. Tons of them come up on E-Bay. Both had very good pics. Quasars got cold joints under the FBT & Zeniths just had random problems. Zeniths were modular but we went component level out of warranty. This made them a bitch to work on unless you knew what to go for. Modules are a nice bail out on a dog or FBT job but $100 + bill was too much on a $200 set. BTW I think thats the right remote. 73 Zeno LFOD ! |

It was a semi-kit. All the modules were built. All the builder did was the final assembly. It seems like the builder had to do the convergence and setup, as the convergence didn't look as good as the factory jobs. IIRC, it was part of a educational course, when Zenith was involved with that or another school. BTW, any member can own it free, just pay the postage! |

There was an old-time electronics store in downtown Milwaukee, that had some really old NOS sets. One set in particular was an 18" Japanese built Olympic wooden table model. That thing had to be there at least 16 years. One day, when I went there, it was gone. Some fool bought for the asking price, $239.00. They were really lousy sets. I told the counterman, that he should've sold him the expressway bridge across the street, as well. |

Here's a picture from the sams of the remote. It's actually nearly the same as the one I have, only some of the colors are different and it doesn't say "computer space command"
