7JP4-0thon

Somehow I gathered 7 of these bulbs over the years and a rainy day here gave me time to test them. I used my Philco 50-T701 as a tester. It is a restored set using the Chuck A SS HV sub but had a dim bulb which needed replacing.

I just opened the back and laid all the bulbs on the bench and used the socket out in the open. 3 will go to the recyclers. 4 were useable with one very good.

It is in the set now next to a 1983 10" GE Son-of-Portacolor that may live as long as the 68 year old Philco. When the GE goes, I have another to throw in.

Let me know if your flat screen going great at 68 years old.

Correct. Typo here as I do have a few of the DP4's. If you can correct the header that will help the internet from collapsing in to a sea of corrections and cat videos showing them testing their 7JP4's.

Typo fixed.

I've got a good spare 7JP4 too.

In your shoes I'd donate the duds to the ETF rebuild project....Maybe they can help other jugs or sets live on.

I've never heard of anyone rebuilding the 7JP4. I understand the glass is too thin. I don't see a weld, where the gun is connected. They must've just fused the glass that is part of the electron gun.
I have to look at mine again.

Thanks Tom. And I did go and pull them back from recycling. John Folsom has noted in an older post that 3KP4 and 7JP4 guns are not available. And I suspect the community is hip deep in 7JP4 duds at the moment like me. Hoarding is the other word.

I think the AGE of our vintage sets flips as many people out as the fact that so many of these old things still work. And, if they're given any kind of decent care, there is no reason they can't still be working in another 68 years...

I hear they make a tremendous ka-boom when they break, maybe make a video?

I culled out the bad ones from my pile a while back but I let the boom out of them slowly with a pick through the evacuation nipple.

I remember taking old oscilloscope tubes and glass cutting the necks. Added some comet and some buckshot and tumbling them till they were clean inside, Then you could either make a flask or a bong out of it.
