Sony KV9000U HV multiplier
Working on a Sony KV9000U that arcs occasionally. Appears to be a crack in the HV multiplier block attached to the flyback. Sony part number 1-202-713-11. Anyone have a cross reference, a source, or any sort of information on this part? The set works great, aside from the arcing.

You will probably need a donor set. A few warnings about it.
1) Sams shows 3 manuals so be sure you got the right one. If the part ## came off the part you are OK. 2) MOST Sonys had a coax anode lead. The shield was HV & the center was the aperture grill. The shield hooked on like normal but the center contacted a little coil spring. It had to be pulled strait off or spring was lost or damaged. Its been prob 30yrs since I worked on one but Sony did HV in several ways in the olden days. 1) a regular HV rectifier tube 2) little wired in tubes & caps. 3) diodes & caps 4) sealed unit. The HV attracts a lot of mung over the years so a good clean up often helps. Pinholes & carbon usually can be drilled out & resealed. 73 Zeno LFOD ! |

Hi Ian, I had a Sony KV-5200 that I repaired the HV block with epoxy. It had a arc path that was tied to ground. I cleaned the carbon arc path as good as I could and dumped a good amount of epoxy on the crack in the HV block. I let set for 24 hours and all is been good with it. There were 2 KV-9000U on eBay this week. May be worth buying an extra set for parts. Good luck with the repairs.

Ian, I forgot I had a photo of my epoxy repair. As you can see I may have been to generous with the amount I used. You can see the metal shield under the epoxy that tied to ground. If you look closely you can see a white color in the middle that would normally be red. This is where my crack in the HV block was. It was arcing directly to that shield. I don't use this set every day but do power it up a couple of times a month.
