The coolest CRT-based Car Instrument Cluster

I used to think the Olds Toronado Trofeo, Buick Reatta, etc were as cool as OEM CRTs could get in a vehicle. That is, until I saw the Aston Martin Lagonda!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP07Jq5b88M&t=225s

It's highlighted at the 3:45 minute mark, just in case the link doesn't skip to it.

Granted, the guy who does these videos I could take him or leave him, I mostly just wanted you guys to see this triple-CRT cluster. It's so 80s-fabulous!

That's neat! I find the CRT cluster to be reminiscent of the CRTs in original cockpit of the Space Shuttle.

At $400 K I guess they could do more !
I like the 60's - 70's displays best. Words not hieroglyphics.
Always know what you are doing at a glance. More reliable too.

BTW IIRC Zenith built the GM monitors. Many break down probably
from weak CRT's

To me , the coolest CRT monitors in car use had to be the ones in the stupidly corny "Knight Rider" 1980s TV show that had the Hoff (David Hasselhoff) playing second fiddle to "K.I.T.T." a robotic Pontiac Trans Am with a mind of it's own . I hated the show , but oh that car !!!!

For those who never saw the show , here is a picture of K.I.T.T 's dashboard with the CRT monitors seen on the RH side of the dashboard .

Yeah, he's kind of annoying. But I am super-jealous of his job. He gets to make money driving crazy weird and exotic cars.

I turned off the sound after about 10 seconds.

Neat to see the vector graphics, but I really think it's spreading too little info over too wide an area. Definitely a "heads down" display.

I remember complaints about the CRT displays in GM products having no tactile feedback. Knobs were deemed much better.

They tried to address that in the newer models. My Cadillac ELR has haptic feedback on the touchscreen and capacitive buttons on the dash (there's a bumper / shaker in the dash, which makes it feel like you've clicked a button that moves).

For the those who aren't familiar, this picture is from the original Space Shuttle cockpit, before it was upgraded to LCD screens. The CRT cluster in the Astin Martin car reminded me of it.

I wonder what the specs are for Space Shuttle CRTs and if they were a unique part.

I'd guess they were specially designed to withstand vibration.

Very fascinating, and definitely a precursor of things to come.

I remember stumbling across this article about the car’s onboard computer a while back: https://jalopnik.com/can-we-emulate-...ash-1627568648
