Zenith TV ad 1953- pop-up speaker

Anybody seen a set like this before?

"Bandshell" speaker pops up for better sound than a set with speaker on the side.

Yes, there was an antique store in Madison Wisconsin a few years ago that had a Zenith with that pop-up speaker. I think they wanted $75 for it at the time.

Zenith 1954 model Bandshell Speaker

Bought one here in Phoenix AZ today for $90 complete with stand. The stand is a completely separate piece and I don't know if it came from Zenith or not, but it's definitely old and fits the set like a glove (much better than the picture indicates - the set wasn't seated properly in the picture). It's the first vinatge TV I've ever bought and I did so because I thought the bandshell speaker was great.

The model number is L22354

The stand is original. I have a nearly identical model save for the pop up speaker (I was wondering what that thing on top of the set in the Sam's was).

I bought mine for 50$ at a junk shop in Tn on a trip. It was the second set I ever bought and my first sucessful restoration. There were tons of odd little things that if I had known about going in would have saved tons of time and head banging.
Mine had a vertically shrunken raster, and week sound, but no video.
Along with a slew of dud tubes the video detector had a cold solder joint which caused the video and audio trouble. After that I had to deal with the vertical running at double frequency which I believe was caused by sams having two different values listed for one of the vertical caps (the value in the parts list was off from the schematic listed value by a factor of 10). I say I believe cause I don't know what was in there originally, and solved the problem by tweaking a resistor value.

I may be able to scan the sam's and the instruction manual (both were acquired after getting the set) if you want.

Good luck restoring yours.

I'll do my best to answer your questions on it.

Tom C.

I have an earlier? version of that set with maroon knobs.
I never touched it. Is it worth restoring??
I know pix tube is good, and, flyback tested good. I know. That means nothing.

I'd say that it is worth restoring.
Not as many caps as most earlier sets.
And a decent preformer too.
