Image orthicon cameras still used in the 1980s in Europe

G'day all.

Been viewing quite a bit of historical European television footage lately as I understand some countries in Europe didn't upgrade to colour until the late 70s or early 80s and some even late as the late 80s!!! Amazingly the countries lagging behind with the times with television were still using image orthicon cameras in the 1980s!

One piece of footage that really caught my eye was a great uptempo groovy disco music performance from 1980 by a pretty duo Angela y Consuelo performing "Esta Es Tu Música" on some Spanish/Portuguese television show in glorious 1950s style image orthicon B&W:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXiRaO8PzQ4
In the clip there is mad haloing around the neons and the glittery suits the duo were wearing and the tone of the picture looks very 1950s!!! I think this show was likely filmed on 3" IO cameras made in the 1950s due to the excessive haloing which looks very similar to American programs shot on RCA TK-10/11 cameras. There's a few more B&W performances of theirs from the same show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ3TPF4IIYw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9pL9Tbcdk

I think this program might be part of the Colombia television network. I have seen some historical footage of Spain's TVE which they seem to use a variety of cameras from RCA TK-10s to Dumont to Fernseh KOA cameras. Here's some historical footage from TVE"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2xsDGb3_NM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fys0HcIPuI

Also Romania were the real late bloomer of colour television transmissions and were using Fernseh KOF IO cameras (introduced in 1964) during the 1980s, here's some 1980 footage showing their cameras in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzCggwKkOQ0

Anyways I would really like to know the name of that program Angela y Consuelo appeared on and the cameras used so I am calling to anyone here with knowledge of Spanish/Portuguese television and the Colombia television network.

The first video looks like the tubes were pretty tired for the lack of contrast. Reminds me of older CCTV cameras when the tubes were on their last legs.

It does look like they used a reasonably modern switcher though from the fades and wipes.

Very odd to watch that Spanish piece, like some sort of weird time warp between 50s America and 80s Spain!

More Angela y Consuelo clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pL6g...eature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9pL...eature=related

Looks like they were active in the mid-late 1970's as they also did a knock-off of ABBA's "Fernando"

The last tv cameras with electronic tubes where used in Romania up untill 1970-1972, when the studios of the 2nd Channel where also moved into the new hadquarters of the Romanian (State) Television, on Calea Dorobanţi (lor)/Dorobantzi Way (Way of the Dorobanţi), near Herăstrău Park. The broadcasting of the 2nd Channel was stoped in the '80's, because of make economies, comrades! It was anyway a channel that was only recived in Bucharest area.
There where plans to introduce color television in Romania, but because of political reasons we had to wait 'till 1983. Even then "comrades, comrades stay calm in your plaices" had something to comment.
TV.R. (Televziunea Română/Romanian Television) aquired Betacam equypment in 1988...

Not 80s yet...

But perhaps this find is still worth the final delurking:

Hessischer Rundfunk, one of the poorer public broadcasters in (then West) Germany, still used Fese KOD cameras as late as October 1976:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDiQOTLndQw#t=503

Video from this OBV is included herein from 6:25 to 7:26. To my taste it looks already a bit embarrassing, in an otherwise full colour broadcast and even combined with 16 mm colour footage of the same event. It could be that HR at this point used to send out this oldtime van for parliament coverage on its regional UHF network and did also so this day, in spite of this particular session being of relevance for the national news, too.

For the East German side I've been told that DDR-F officially decommissioned its last B&W control room in 1980 after it was hardly used anymore for a couple of years. The space has been reused for a playout suite from which the school broadcasts could be handled by a single engineer.

If I will ever go on a tour of the TVR (Romanian State Television) I will ask 'em if they still have one of those "Fernseh" KOF IO b & w cameras. They've preserved some old cameras, but colour ones. http://www.tvr.ro/expo-tvr-60-televi...8514.html#view

Anyway, at least for the main studios from Bucharest Romania imported only Capitalist cameras after 1968? And if this wasn't enought, they bought in 1969 3 broadcast vans from a company based in Ohio (forgot it's name); 2 of 'em are still in use, the 3rd is a spare parts donor; of coruse the television equypment from them isn't the original one.

That would remind me of the USSR, because I never saw Ostankino-produced footage with domestic colour cameras. Always Thomson or Bosch there.

But have really further B&W cameras after the KOF been imported by Romania? If not it would be interesting to hear when exactly they really last used them and how they managed to keep them in shape for real broadcasting use til the final end.

The KCU 40 with the Timisoara logo is remarkable as well. Either they possessed colour equipment much before using it for real broadcasts, or these were used purchases, because the KCU 40 has in 1975 at the latest been discontinued in favour of the KCK.

Any details about their OBV colour equipment? The vehicle that captured the shootings in the evening of 22 Dec 1989 obviously had Saticon cameras, which, as far as I know, narrows it down to the Japanese manufacturers.

By the way, here's evidence of WZT (Poland) cameras being used in Romania:

KOF = "Bosch"-"Fernseh"?
After they've equyped the studios from Bucharest I don't think there was any new need for b & w cameras.
Iaşi (Jassy) was a regional studio, so they made some economies. I think other regional studios had East-Europeanen made cameras... once I stumbeled on an article about this matter, but forgot where.
I will ask what cameras they've used in December of 1989. They did had U-Matic and Betacam by that time. But didn't saticons had a much vivid image then plumbicons?
Where did you've seen KCU40 with Timişoara logo?
P.A.L. colour cameras where imported in 1979-1980.
I think in U.S.S.R. there where made some color tv cameras. Maybe the plumbicon tubes where imported. Czechs made some plumbicon cameras: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRKSO0Gfovc

What distinguishes the picture of Saticon cameras are the streaks on moving (usually by panning the camera of course) bright lights, particularly on night scenes with the gain cranked up. Such as the footage from that night.

The studio had Bosch KCP 60, by the way.

Indeed. Is this a subject of interest? Then it should get its own thread.

I guess the people to be seen from 9:18 had no idea that they would end up on Youtube... And who had to cope more with the lighting: The old beasts or rather the fancy smartphones?

If you want to see a real production with these Tesla cameras, just hit Nemocnice na kraji města into the search field. This series (not the "20 years later" run of course) has been produced with them exclusively, except for some handheld shots with a TK 76.

Have these Tesla's ever appeared outside Czechoslovakia?
