I figured the "Eastman" had to be the George Eastman Company of Kodak fame.

Thank you for posting that ad. That would make a fun print to frame and hang on the wall in a room full of old TVs.

It was Eastman Chemical Company, a subsidiary of the Eastman Kodak Company.

Good find! Wasn't tenite the plastic used on many pre-war radio bezels, the stuff that deteriorates so much? If so, I guess they had it perfected by the time these were introduced as they always seem to be in good shape.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Some Tenite radio bezels are notorious for severe warping. Perhaps there were different flavors of Tenite over the years . . . ?

The bell insulators in my CTC-4 and 21-CT-55 are still in great shape, perhaps there were chemical defferences between the years?

"Tenite" was a company marketing trademark that covered (and still does) several families of plastics. Those that were used for radio bezels starting in the 1930's were cellulosic plastics (probably acetates or acetate-butyrates) that were the earliest plastics in the Tenite brand. They begin as powdered esters and are compounded using various plasticizers (for molding and flexibility). These plasticizers apparently will "evaporate" over many decades allowing the parts to shrink and warp. This may depend on the particular plasticizer used since some of the these 70-80 year old plastic parts are still perfect while others have turned to dust. I am not a chemist but that seems to be the opinion of those I have asked.
Polyethylene probably only became part of the company product line in maybe the 1950s. Last edited by jlw37663; 11-10-2011 at 08:40 AM. Reason: correction |

When I posted this I wondered if anyone would be interested - glad that it brought up these connections. Particularly, I never had heard of the Tenite brand or its previous history. People on this forum are amazing!
