Well not quite. Holding it like that you need to move the thumb. Its best to hold the head with the left hand to turn it and keep the right handed thumb stationary.

Yeah, it doesn't sound very entertaining. On the flip side, it was fun to watch Beavis and Butt-Head force-feed an 8-track tape to a VCR with a hammer.

We used 91% isopropyl & a REAL chamois. Also had a
special brush from JVC for hard cases. One cat at another
shop would pull the head drum & move them out a
tiny bit & reclean as a last resort. Often worked but I imagine
it cut into the tape & clogged agn fast.

I used to have a endless supply of Freon TF at the electronics manu job until the envirofreaks banned it . Now I use 91% isopropyl Alcohol and chamois.

IIRC I read somewhere (maybe labguy's world?) that using deer hide with head cleaner is effective.

Another goofy one is 1/2" computer data tape...According to labguy it's MUCH more abrasive than normal video tape....I found some I was planning to use with my EIAJ deck (and actually did a 3 min test recording/playback on) and mentioned it to him as an alternative to the sticky tapes of that format (and VHS that stretches in those machines), and his response was something to the effect of "that's a bad idea you'll grind your heads down. I'll occasionally use those tapes to polish a chipped head."

Deer hide? Hmmm... that's perfect because one of my other hobbies is whitetail deer hunting!
