thrift store find

found this e 34 sylvania superset at the local thrift store.priced at 15.99,it was half off day.when i got to the cashier,he was in a huff over a customer with a bad credit card.rang it up for 1.00.set displayed a very dark, out of focus picture.bad solder joints in the tuner and crt socket.after the resolder, picture was good but a setup was badly needed.the crt was a little soft but after a couple hours,it woke up nicely.i tested the remote and it works with an old magnavox hand unit.i remember these sets and how nice of a picture they made.

I have the standard knob tuned version from 1982 and there were some hospital sets with digital tuning and a wired remote/pillow speaker that used this chassis. The flyback transformers were high failure in some of these.

right on those flybacks.this one looks to be replaced.always kept several tubes of ge silicone around back then.i have a rca xl100 of the same vintage and it has a slightly better picture in my opinion.i think the early 80s were the last of the really good sets.

The flyback was bad in my set; but, it was shorted and blowing the B+ fuse. Someone found me a used one in a junker set; but, they are getting very hard to find for these models.
