Well, the problems turned out to be easily corrected.

I was checking it through the turntable, and found that the cartridge had been hooked up wrong. It has 4 pins, but the two in the middle (ground terminals) are bridged together. One of the ground wires was connected to the metal cartridge mounting shield, and the other ground terminal on the cart had the left side positive wire connected to it. I hooked up the cartridge correctly and viola...plenty of sound on both channels.

The highs were still distorted, but I replaced the stylus this evening and straightened that out.

Now all I have left to do is to re-string the dial cord. When I remove the chassis for that headache, I think I'll go ahead and replace the electrolytics in the tuner for good measure. I recapped the amp and preamp last weekend.
