Early model GE Superadio.

I guess I got lucky yesterday. I picked up a fairly nice Superadio at a thrift, I usually haunt. It works well as-is, but I've never seen one without the external antenna terminals. I might take it apart to see if there's any difference compared to the later models.

I used to have one of the earlier ones with the single 6.5" alnico speaker (no tweeter), but it had terminals on the back for ext. ant.

I found a newer one at a thrift for $3 - 2 speakers and external terminals.
Looks/works like a dream-use it daily!

What is the model number on that one? All mine here have the antenna terminals, starting with my 7-2880B. Maybe the version without a letter suffix or an "A" had no terminals?

Mine is a 7-2880A. Probably the earliest model. Seems to work very well.

I bought a new Superadio 2 in 1991 and used it for a few years on and off. One day I turned it on and the AM did not work. I have read that the RF amp transistor goes bad causing this. I have never opened it up to find out. It sits today in mint condition in the original box with all packing and papers waiting for me to fix it.

I've never seen one without the antenna terminals either. I sold my Superadio years ago, but have a Superadio III that I use for general listening. It's served me well for years.

I also have an early predecessor to the Superadio series; a 9 transistor GE P780H. It's a great radio and a joy to listen to. It too has antenna terminals on the back. I believe it's from 1964 or '65:

Those are nasty to work on. I have one on the shelf waiting for me to finish it. The tuner and front end is mounted on a separate assembly. You have to unstring the dial cord.

I have a well-used 1st generation Superadio on my nightstand, and it gets run all night quite often as I fall asleep listening to it (usually on WSM Nashville.) I bought it at a hamfest a few years back for two dollars because I felt sorry for the lady selling it - she looked like she was there selling a few things because she needed the money. For two dollars I thought "why not" and didn't even expect it to work. There's paint or fingernail polish on the dial marking a couple of stations that I've never tried to remove.

Lamenting the lack of good sensitive and selective receivers, the GE 7-2885-F is the best FM unit I have for resisting overload of the over-powered stations in my area. Mostly religious and corporate pop

The capture ratio is so good, you can move the antenna(or unit location) to choose between stations on the same frequency!

Most consumer-grade FM stuff, especially the digital tuners on boom boxes, is horrible.
