Wow. Great to see analog dominating physical media.

The thing is, likely if you look at CD sales, it's not a hard number to beat. It's all basically a novelty now. I wouldn't be surprised if the sales of vintage records beats them both! The majority of young music buyers just download what they want. In fact creating a permanent library isn't even necessary. You just call up what you want to hear, when you want to hear it.

Music ownership altogether (including digital downloads) seems to be waning.

Yeah, nobody buys CDs anymore. You just have your songs on your phone, or use some streaming service. CDs are passé. Vinyl has a certain nostalgia to it, and unlike CDs, it's a visual medium as well. You get to watch a record spinning around, and interact with it yourself. A CD keeps you separated from it, you put it in a hole, and it's gone. You push buttons to get your music. In short, CDs are just a music storage device, and they're obsolete. Vinyl records are more than a storage device, they're an experience.

Not that I care a whole lot myself.

I agree. I've been a record collector since I was a kid and actually enjoy 78's above them all. I like how they look, feel, and sound with that high rpm background noise. All of that is enjoyable to me as much as the music. It's like food. If you just had to take one pill at each mealtime that would keep you feeling satisfied and healthy, you'd still opt to prepare and eat a normal meal. The final result is not the spice of life.
