External self shooters for cameras
Hello. There where made mechanical external self shutters. But there was ever any that let you set a exposure time longer then 1 second? For eg., it's evening and you need 5 seconds exposure time, so you want to use the external shooter because you don't have a tripod and you don't want the camera to move, and you need the external shutter to open the camera's shutter and close it after 5 seconds. There was any shutter like that?

The Autoknips could set exposures from one half second to ten seconds. For this you had to set the camera shutter control to "B" (bulb).

You mean external timers?
Normally whenever I need to do manual exposures I either use the cable release and a stopwatch or count in my head. For those really long exposures the better cable releases include a threaded thumbscrew to lock the release so you don't kill your thumb pressing the button for five minutes. |

I wish I had one when I went through the south (US) years ago. Ever try to use the self timer on a Hasselblad? I think the average nuclear plant is easier to run...

I’ve done some cable release exposures with tripods and a few without. I think my record is 1/4 sec with a 50 mm lens (120 format) hand held, and it came out. Tripod and cable releases make night time so much fun, esp with slow film. If anyone wsnts, Ill post examples...

When I had a Fuji X-Pro1 it had a mechanical shutter cable socket, I used an automatic air freshener sprayer (airwick), a regular release cable, and a cheap RC car to make a remote shutter clicker.
With my Nikon D700 and N90s I use a Neewer remote rig that attaches to that weird connector above the PC flash connector. |

I've just started back shooting film with a 1947 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Graflex with a 120 film back and want to do some time exposures. |

Still cameras had cable releases and T (Time) exposure. I have Cerebral Palsy spasticity. Part athetoid, the slow speeds rarely get used on my cameras, 1/60 upwards does get used.
