Early GE AC operated transistorized clock radio w/ CD markings

This is the ebay radio that I was asking opinions of on the D&S forum a week or so ago. It arrived today and is in very good condition.

This is a circa 1962 GE transistorized AM clock radio w/ CD markings that is AC operated only. Upon looking at the chassis, there are many Japanese components; but, I suspect the radio was assembled in the USA. This radio does have a dial light and plays fairly well; but, I do see some new caps in it's future. This is the oldest AC only transistor radio that I've run into. I guess the reason they were not made earlier is because of the high cost of line operated transistor output stages and the increased cost of high value electrolytic caps needed for transistor radios.

Doesn't it have a power tranformer to step down the operating voltage? Looks like it has one.

How's the clock motor?

FYI: That's a Telechron "capsule" clock movment. Fairly easy to replace the capsule and/or coil if needed.

The clock runs; but, I've discovered that the alarm is stuck in the "on" position. I noticed that there are two transformers. I'm sure one is an audio output and the other could be a power or an audio driver transformer. I'll pay closer attention to that when I remove the back again.

The alarm gear pinion's grease has probably hardened. Disassembly, cleaning and lightweight lubricant will get things back in order.

Is that a mercury switch in the capsule, to turn on Dad's coffeepot?

I don't think so. There is no AC outlet for that; however, I've seen many clock radios that had switched AC outlets for that purpose.
