21gup22
does anyone know if the saftey glass is bonded or is it like the 21FBP22 just a lens that is air spaced off the CRT by a gasket. My latest set has the
21GUP22 and no sign of a cateract, so either its an air space or the bonding agent is MUCH better than the earlier stuff. |

I have a mid 1960's magnavox combo that has a 21gvp22 and it has a small cataract that is right around the edge, the tube was installed in 1968. I have several 21fjp22 sets that had tubes rebuilt in the 70's and early 80's that have no cataracts.

I think that one's banded; no glass. Only problem is that if it's a rebuilt, it's likely clear glass (no tinting), and it will have a washed-out picture. You can, however, get hold of a tinted separate glass from a set which used a 21FBP22, and just use it with the 21GU and have a nice contrast and color depth. The cataracts seem to start at about age 25, regardless of use or brand. And that's pretty consistent based on my years in old TVs. Even some Sony tubes, which I don't think I realized had bonded glass, from the 80s are starting to show up with cataracts.

My 21GUP22 has no band or safety glass. It is identical to the 21FBP22 except it has a grey face which looks to be rare earth phosphor rather than yellow sulfide that has the green face.
