ODDBALL portable projection TV in boombox!
Other than the Philco Safari, I'd never seen a mini-reflective TV until I found this Quasar boombox on eBay a few weeks ago. It's a 1978 model XP-1239, with AM-FM stereo, cassette, and what I think is a 2" tube mounted vertically like the Safari, and what looks to be a flat mirror with a fresnel lens to magnify. The Safari had a parabolic mirror and no lens, so this is a little different. Anybody seen one?

As seen in the November 1978 Popular Mechanics.

That is odd! I recall seeing a small stereo TV/FM/AM/Micro Cassette back in the 80's.

I got a bunch of odd parts from a Quasar dealer, where the owner died and the family was clearing out the building.
There was a NOS 2" CRT, that had a Quasar Electronics label on it. I thought it might've been for a Cam-corder, view finder. Some of the lower-end models had a mono-chrome view finder. Then again, it could've came from a set of this type. |

To put in perspective, $400 in 1978 is over $1400 today.

Yeah, I have one- GE branded 4" color set, microcassette, AM/FM... Seems like it was from '85... It has that "minimalist" mid-80s look to it. TV's VERY good, dunno about the rinky-dink cassette, AM/FM, about normal..

IneedIwantIgottahave. Great find of bizarre engineering efforts. And I have Sandys same GE color boombox. A spectacular CRT with the worlds biggest wallwart. The microrecorder is removable for meetings.

The little Panasonic clock/TV/radio is very clever in that it has a little blue VFD clock arranged to be reflected in the corner of the picture. Of course you can turn the little clock on and off so it's not there with the TV. Just another trick that is cool to pull off with a reflective picture. No parabolics or fresnel lenses...just a 4" b/w CRT with the mirror at 45 degree angle.
One of my favorite little "coffee table" sets in my collection
