VHS Camera turns on for 7 seconds and shuts itself off...
I have a Pansonic AFX8. I've used it on and off for over 2 years to film friends and it just recently stopped working. It used to work fine, but now, I will pull the start switch and it will turn on for a few seconds, then stop.
The B&W CRT monitor turns on for 10 seconds and then shuts off. During that short time, none of the playback buttons work, but I can press buttons such as the date/time displays and they will show. During the 10 seconds, you cannot eject the tape. Click here for a link to a video of it. Hope this can be fixed, love this camera... |

The power supply is detecting an abnormal event and shutting itself down.
Sounds like its recap time. |

X2 on the recap. Those are loaded with those old surface mount electrolytics.
Start by looking for ones that are leaking electrolyte. Next check for ones that are shorted. Without a ESR meter it might be difficult to pin it down to one cap and you would be better to shotgun it and replace all the electrolytics as another one will fail soon anyways. You could also start replacing caps closest to the power regulation and advance forward. PS. Be very careful with the ribbon cables when you seperate the housing and circuit boards. |

Thank you for your replies. Took the thing apart today, very interesting machine. I decided just for the heck of it to put a battery in while it was deshelled and power it on.
To my surprise... it worked? The thing actually turned on and ejected the tape that'd been in there for a few months now. it seems to play tapes and enter into film mode just fine. So strange?! Is this still a cap issue? https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...Jj?usp=sharing |

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You could have a look at the main board seeing as you're almost there. It will hinge down. There's a few clips and a screw or two holding it in. Look for caps that are leaking as this can corrode the traces.
Otherwise just turn it on and let it run and playback, record, rewind / FF and see if it errors out again. Also try all the functions from cold starts when it's been powered off for a while. This could also be a belt issue when it starts up and goes to feed the tape onto the head and the motor starts, the belt slips and the unit shuts itself down. A lot of these belts are getting pretty soft and weak now after 30+ years. When it was shutting down did you hear any faint sound of a motor running? |
