CTC-4

Hi Terry,
As you know the CTC-4 followed the 21CT55 CTC-2. I believe it does have narrow band demod. This is where RCA started to cut corners (production costs) to gear up for mass production of color sets. A somewhat simplified chassis with printed circuit boards. Fewer tubes and componets. They did provide a pretty good choice of models with the CTC-4. Two at first and then increased to five by the end of production. Alas, these sets found few owners and were still for sale, at discounted prices, in stores long after the redesigned CTC-5 Super and Deluxe chassis were introduced. The CTC-4 chassis could be a bit tempermental and unstable. This really didn't help promote public confidence in color tv and RCA quickly engineered the even more simplified CTC-5's.

See detailed information on the CTC4 on Ed Reitan's web page:

CTC-4 Tuner

Terry,
Just a followup, kudos to WVSAZ for directing you to Ed Reitan's site. Good deal. By the way, if the CTC-4 chassis was simplified, the tuner was a nightmare of pullies, cords, cogs washers, gears and god knows what else. An exploded view picture will make this very clear. Which model did you recieve? The table model was most common and RCA dropped the price in Jan. 1956 to $695.00. Great CTC-4 ads can be seen in Life mag. Aug. 1, '55, Jan.23, & May 7, 1956.

ctc-5

I did not get it yet, this guy will sell if he has duplicate sets,he has about every color model rca had in storage,i would like a 21ct55 but i dont think he has any.. my ct-100 works great..it needs a partner to sit next to it..).. thats why i am asking how the actual picture on the ctc-4 looks from someone who has an operational one..
i know they use a 21axp22 with sulfide phosphors..
i read someplace awhile back that the actual color picture on the ctc-4 and 5 deluxe was not too great because of the narrow band chroma...but i want to hear it from a working set..
happy halloween..!!
lets all go tricker treating over to eric h house..

Get real

Terry,
What's with all the concern over the picture quality of a CTC-4. This set is 47 years old! You would be lucky just to get your hands on one and if it still produces any kind of a picture that would be a plus.

CTC-4 in RadioElectronics Jan/56

The Jan'56 issue of RadioElectronics featured a cover photo of a CTC-4. I was fortunate to find one (the TV, I already had the magazine) at the AWA meet two years ago in Rochester, NY. I'll post pictures.

CTC4 on ebay last year

There was a CTC-4 on ebay a year or more ago. Here is a picture of it. It is the same model as the one I picked up but mine isn't in as nice shape. I'm refinishing mine now, but have been for over a year.

My CTC-4

Here is my CTC-4 as it looked as soon as I got it home. I have the legs section removed in this photo as it had to come off to get it into my small car. It has the original back and is complete except one knob is wrong. My 21AXP22 had gone to air. I was fortunate to find a good replacement! Did you see a 21AXP22 just went on ebay for about $650 US. That's $1000 plus duty, plus taxes, +++ where I live. One of these days I hope to actually restore this set with a total re-cap to operational status. I just want to finish the cabinet first so it looks nice on display.

Rob

Another CTC 4 Shot

I was suprised how nice this came out. I worked for RCA Service, but never saw a CTC4. All the older techs said it was a dog. It was tough to converge, and had many small problems. I think it was built really well and is great machine. A shall take great care of it until my time is up, and someone else becomes the steward.

Thumbs up Way Kool!

Kirk,

Thanx for posting those two really terrific screen shots. That CTC-4 makes a beautiful picture, and the convergence looks perfect! You are a proud new parent.

I really should get busy and restore mine.

Rob
