1962 Grundig 3262 Tabletop

This guy was on the way to recycling when I intercepted it.




The back cover is missing and the knobs are very stiff but on visual the case wasn't too rough, the tubes were all there and it was just very very dirty.




The chassis is complete with no animal damage and doesn't look like it has ever been worked on. Both tuning wires had come off a pulley but after I put them back on I could get both to run across the range but the knob is slipping. I'll try and do an initial clean and lubrication today and figure out why its slipping.

It cleaned up well. It lived near the ocean though so there is a lot of surface rust you can't really get off with completely stripping the chassis.




The dial glass came out really nice. No scratches or damage.
I put my attention towards the tuning dial itself. I get a full motion end to end but it slips badly. The clutch is slipping, but not for the common Grundig issue of the clutch itself being split in half. I don't know what to do here.



Alright well after some continuity tests I brought out the dim bulb and began applying power. Started with a 25, then a 40, then 60 and after the 100 didn't smoke anything out I gave it straight power.
Hey nice! Both the backlight bulbs work.



I got hum on the speaker but nothing on the radio. Clean the tube pins a few more times and get everything lit and no longer crackling when you wiggle them. Using an isolation transformer I attached an ipod to the phono/tape port and I could hear audio, so at least the audio amp circuit was working but it was fighting presumably because it needed an overhaul.
This is where things fall apart.
I catch smoke coming from somewhere under the pair of 6DL5's and power down. The radio isn't all that easy to work with on its side without the dial glass installed because it really wants to tip over so I put that back on and get it on its side. I'm still having stability issues and I don't want this to fall over so I grab a book to support it with and hold the radio by both ends.
The chassis spins in my fingers. It's still live with wires and test leads everywhere and I got nowhere to grab it, so it goes tumbling down and the tone control cracks the dial glass.

Alright well at this point I'm waiting on schematics so back into the cabinet it goes.

I'm guessing that the "Fleetwood" designator after the Grundig on your radio must of been the Canadian resaler of Grundig Products, like how Majestic was the Resaler of Grundig products in the USA?

Also I find it kind of interesting that the Canadian version of this radio has an RCA jack for the phono input instead of the original DIN inputs like the USA Models had (that were retained from the original German build specs.)

It took two months but I got around to purchasing a cap kit for all the wax papers and the one stacked lytic. I did not find any issues with drifted resistors yet and neither did I see any issues in the tuning stages.
Still don't know how to fix the clutch. It keeps slipping.

Having to go in for a second round of capacitors due to seven I missed. Also identified a burned out 1K 1/3 watt resistor (R23) that I can only guess was caused by C48 shorting at some point.

Geah, I wish me an U.S.A. export version, becuase it does have F.M. 88-108, not like the Europeanen ones that have 88-100. I had a stereo '5017U', but I gave it away. And it could be fitted with a stereo decoder.

Completed the recap this evening after ordering a second round of caps that I missed on the last order. Smaller lytics have been replaced and the big can has been restuffed.



Brought it up on the dim bulb and even with it limiting to 22w and 50v while laying on its back with no external antenna in a absement it picked up KFBK Sacramento some 1500km away. I've heard stories of how superb Grundig's tuners were.

Unfortunately the fun was short lived and after a few seconds with the bulb bypassed there was smoke, sparks and the tuner died again.




R23 is a 1K 1/3 watt resistor as per the schematic. The original resistor was pretty cremated but I could identify the #1 brown and #2 black band so I ordered another and it burned up again. I can't tell what would be causing that resistor to burn up.

Okay I tried to setup something to see what kind of voltage was being applied to the resistor and what kind of current it was trying to take and I subbed in a 1/8w resistor and go figure, it's behaving fine now.

Well now I got AM and FM working. The alignment seems good so I don't see a reason why the shortwave wouldn't work if I attach an antenna.

Also figured out that if the pot metal in the clutch has not failed but the clutch material itself has worn down you can cut little discs of sandpaper to replace it. Works great!

Well it's back together but there's still a problem somewhere.

the EL84 tuning eye has a good filament and the radio on cold start will make it work but after about a minute the eye has opened completely and you can't get it back, even when tuned into a strong station, so something is drifting but I can't tell what.

Congratulations! on getting your Grundig working.

About the EM84 bargraph magic eye, suspect a drift upwards of the 470K resistor & any high Ohmic value resistors around it.
Happens very often & eye misbehaves.
Does the AVC voltage have a healthy swing between on-station/off-station at the eye tube grid.

Note: EL84 is the audio output tube, was a typo in your post i guess.

Yes, my bad. I meant the EM84. The 470K and the 1.8 meg both test in value, which was odd. The 470 actually had me lost for a bit because I could not find it. Turns out it's hiding inside the base for the tube.

I reseated the tube a few times and it started working again so it must of been a really weak connection. It's still not closing completely but with with an FM signal sitting next to the radio I get about -20v and it closes almost all the way now so I'm happy with that. It's already pretty dim.

Taming any German dial cord wins my respect. You are lucky you
didnt have to do a restring ! When any string job came in we passed
it on to a specialist. Only time he failed was a GE Superadio #1
