Generally, in this country, it depended on the tube type. The HV rectifier type with the A and B suffix, meant the tube had improvments regarding X-Ray shielding, using leaded glass and very little electrical improvements.
The A and B suffixes used in many other tubes had a lot more meaning to it.
Controlled heater warmup for series string applications, higher current handling characteristics in rectifiers and beam power tubes, etc.
