'65 Magnavox Magnasonic console record player
A few weeks ago, I saw this Magnavox console record player at the flea market. When I first saw it, I noticed no indication of it being solid state anywhere on the unit; but, after I got it home, I discovered that it was indeed solid state and has a date of 2/65 on the chassis. The cabinet is in above average cosmetic condition; but, I had to fix one of the leg mounts where it had ripped out of the cabinet bottom.
When I pulled the back, I discovered that someone had robbed the speakers. The only speaker left was one of the original cone front firing tweeters. I had a couple of full range speakers that I salvaged from a cheap '70's Morse console; but, it would be nice to find some Magnavox originals. The changer mechanism works perfectly; but, the needle is broken and it appears that the cartridge output is weak. I got a very loud buzz when touching the phono input terminals of the amp; but, I'm going to recap the amp for good measure. I've included a picture of the remaining tweeter. Hopefully, I can find a matching tweeter or possibly someone could recommend something that's currently made that would be a good choice. I've also included a picture of the warranty tag that I found inside the stereo. You're not likely to find this kind of warranty on modern junk. This must be my week for finding consoles with missing speakers. The other day, I found a '63 Westinghouse that was missing it's speakers.

I left you some comments on the ARF site about this.
Measure the distance between 2 of the woofer mounting screws. The speakers I have are 8 1/4" I believe the ones I have are 10" speakers. My amplifier is slightly different from yours, too. |

The woofer is 8" and the tweeter is 5".

Well, we tried. I bet the OEM speakers are out there.
I wonder why somebody left the tweeter? |

Who knows? I wonder why they removed any of the speakers. They were probably removed by some clueless teenager who wanted them for use with his high powered stereo in his vehicle, only to have them blow to heck and back when he tried to use them.
I'm sure the correct originals will come along in time. At one time, I actually had some of those tweeters; but, I think I tossed them when I was cleaning out. It was one of those situations where, "I'll never need these" and out they went.

Here's proof that I did have the speaker. Too bad it's 2" too big!!! (Sounds like a line from a porn movie...)

Those record changers work really well. I always thought they were kind of neat since they selected the record size automatically.
My mother bought a Magnavox console in 1965 that reminds me of a larger version of yours (it has an AM/FM stereo radio, too). It still works perfectly and has never been taken apart. I replaced the needle once, and I remember spraying out the controls years ago. |
