Electrolytic Cap ?
On my GE 21C1549 there is an Electroytic cap mounted on the lower cabinet of the set. Specs on it are 4 MFD 25 volt non polarized and it has radial leads. Having some audo issues and this cap is original to the set and I suspect it. Rest of set is recapped. Can I use an axial electrolytic cap on it? Nearest I have found at Just Radios is 10 uf 25 volt. This set has the 3 speaker setup.

The leads won't matter-you can make it work. Even if the new one were radial it would likely be different enough that you'd have to modify the mounting.
Main thing is you need non-polarized. I think there is a way you can use 2 polarized caps to replace it? Not sure, though. This is the type of cap that you just might, if you are lucky, find at your local Radio Schlock.

Back-to-back (+ to +) or (- to -) 8 mf electrolytics would give you a replacement for your nonpolarized 4 mf.

4MFD is used as a bass filter for a high mid range / tweeter setup , I have put in polarized caps into speaker circuits before and did not notice much , if any difference .
10 MFD would cause more of the lower mid range and bass to go into the speakers that are connected to the cap . You could probably salvage a 4 mfd out of a old VCR or radio or transistor TV . Nonpolarized one's are a bit tougher to find , I wouldn't worry too much about the working volt . Is this cap series wired with the mid range and tweeter ? |

Thanks all, yes it is wired for the mids and highs. When I removed the wire to that the sound improved. I was going to just find something out of another set that would work, but thanks to Avionic's source I can get a new one, plus I didnt know bout that place. I think I will hide the new one and leave the original in place.
