I think it means you can't remove the key unless it is in park.

I think, most newer cars with automatic transmission do that. My Prius has a Park button and a Power button. If you push the power button before the park, it goes into park. You don't have to have the key in your hand, just in your pocket. You get really spoiled with these things.
