Found use for the TG&Y

I never thought I'd find a use for this TV. Gave it to my Dad and wired it up to the cable box in the living room, so whatever the livingroom TV is on, this TV is on. Worked well actually. Did it so when he's watching football he never misses a moment.

Is that a rebadged GE? I know I've seen that set before under a different name. I swear it was GE.

Are you sure the GE you saw was not a rebadged Sampo?

It is certainly possible. They have rebadged other sets.

That GE really is a mixed bag. I have GE TV's built by Samsung, Daewoo, Quasar in Franklin Park and LG, Goldstar.
I have a Microwave, Dehumidifier and large window air conditioner made in Korea by LG.

Well that TV sure didn't last long. The freakin thing is cooked. Came home, my Dad didn't smell anything odd, and I knew that stink. The smell of burnt electronics. I go around and checked the TV, it's on, no raster, no sound. Dad says it's turned off, nope, not off. Burning HOT on the top vent and emitting a very foul odor.

Should I just trash it? The CRT is probably ok, and can save that at least. It's the same CRT as the old IBM PC's and TRS 80 all in ones, but black and white, not green.

Unless I regard something as completely disposable or am looking for an excuse to part/trash it I usually take a few minutes to pull the back and look for easy/doable fixes as a last courtesy for failed SS electronics...And a way of learning how/why things fail.

What you do with it is up to you...

PS: A good general rule: Don't leave things running unattended for long unless you are prepared to deal with any damage that may result.

I didn't, my father has a tendency to do this. And I'm getting worried about it, he didn't even smell it, or even know it was powered on.

I'll give it a look over, but it's not really a high quality set to begin with.

If anything, I'll send it off to someone for parts, maybe let radiotvphononut have a go at it for himself, free.
