Sylvania Halo triple score.

Well, I am back from my trip down to the Catskill mountains about 20-24 miles south of me and much to my wife's soon dismay I have come back not with the one Halo that I went to get, but with 3 sets!

Turns out the guy was downsizing and he used to fix TV's and still had his grandmother's Zenith Space Command 400 console and Zenith Space Command 300 portable that he also wanted to get rid of. He was happy they were going to someone that was going to use them and appreciate them because otherwise he said he was going to part them out, so he gladly gave them all to me free. He said he remembered fixing the Space Command for his grandmother when he was a kid.
I know Zeniths are good but am not familiar with these two. He said the console was the top of the line Zenith in its day. They both have remotes and he said they were both working the last time he tried them, but he knew enough not to run them much.
He did say the Halo was not working but did not know why.
He also found the missing knobs for the Halo. It is missing the back but the rest of it is there including all the tubes.

Excellent! With a little research I am finding out that the Space command 400 console was the first tv to have a "practical" remote control.

I am sure I was quite fortunate that he had the remote with this set, as well as the one with the 300 portable.

The Zenith console appears to be a 1959 model "The Danville" model B3010
according to my 1959 Zenith full line poster. Should be a nice set when working.

Yup! Twas the first thing that went up. It is over my bed as before....Sorta like a vintage TV Dreamcatcher.

Some day once I get things more arranged and collected I need to post a thread on my new digs, and start showing off all the nice stuff that is no longer packed like cord wood in a single bed room.

Curious... does anyone know exactly what kind of light is in these sets? Is it neon, flourescent, or something else? My Halolight works well... and sometimes it surprises me the that 60 year old light bulb still functions considering it's always on as long as the set is on.

I seem to recall reading that it is flourescent, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry so long replying back to my thread I started, I am on vacation now and did a lot of O.T. this past week.
Anyway, the Halolight CRT tested very good. And since that was the TV I went to get originally that is the one I am going to work on first.
As far as I can tell it is a 1956 Rexford model. With the back gone I don't have a model number and can't find one on the chassis either, but going from old ads and comparison with others I found on the internet, that is my conclusion.
The same Sam's fotofact covers a number of models in the same time frame including the Rexford and the Kirkwood which is close, but the Kirkwood had a faux finish and the Rexford a mohogany vaneer like mine does. I have the photofact on order from http://theschematicman.com/.

I have not pulled out the hallolight itself to look at it yet and see if is florescent or neon, I wondered about that myself. From pictures I have seen of other sets I think it is neon, It has a small transformer and a couple resisters that go to it from the set, No ballast or other florescent bulb type parts. The light bulb itself is inside the bezel and I can't see it until I pull it out and take it apart. Not ready to do that yet and want to keep it safe inside for now.

Thanks for the info on the Zenith set. As I said the guy told me both the Zenith's were working the last time he powered them up and he seemed to know a lot about TV's so I took his word for it. I have not yet had time and checked the CRT's in the Zeniths though, nor will I power them up without at least changing out the electrolytics.
I am putting in an order next week for the caps for the Halo and will use this thread to post how the restoration is going. This will be my first TV after working only on radios.

When you disassemble the bezel and light, you will find that a good cleaning in there will help display it quite nicely once it's back together again.
