I sort of did a lesser version of that....Most of the anime I've watched in the last ~12 years I've archived. There is probably around 350 VHS tapes I've made in the first 8 years before I switched to DVD (no estimates on disc count), some of which were S-VHS-ET recordings...Alot of redundancy exists thanks to me being a stickler for recording quality, having good decks die at bad times and recording multiple runs of a show to try and compensate....One day I've got to split each series to it's own set of tapes/DVDs and back it up to digital.
