Well, at least ONE thing they got wrong-Sort of. The big red car is NOT a "Custom job".. It is a Mercedes Benz 600 from at least 1968. they were made in 2 different wheelbases, the "Sedan" 4 door, & the Grosser limo version than was another door length longer. The "Grosser" was made w/either 4 doors or a 6 door version. They were practically "Custom" jobs, I don't think they were made just "On Speculation", very few were, if at all. But the Sky-And your pocketbook-were the limit on how you could order one out. You could order the Grosser w/a full convertible top, one that had just a hard top over the driver's compartment, or a Cabriolet version that covered just over the rear seat, or covered half the top, or on up to the driver's compartment. They were made 1963-1983 thereabouts, I think only about 2100 all told were made, John Lennon owned one, as did Pope Paul VI, Mao Tse-Tung & I think Nicolai Chowchescu... They pretty much stopped importing them into America in the 70s, & production rapidly fell off, most cars of this class were set up to be easily imported here, & it became harder & harder to conform to safety & pollution regs. But that's NOT to say they weren't excellent cars. The Rolls Royce Silver Shadow of 1965 merely "Came Close" to the big Mercedes .The Sedan version had a W/B of 126", the Grosser was close on to 140", & both were powered by Mercedes' 1st V-8, a 6.3 liter of300+ H/P. The Sedan was capable of 127 MPH, the Grosser almost as fast. Phil Hill took one & 5 friends around Brands Hatch, & came close to setting a record for circling it w/a car that carried that many.. Mercedes started designing these in 1956, they were NOT constrained by any budget, just develop the Finest Automobile in the World. Mercedes made 6,7 passenger Cabriolet cars capable of travelling 120 MPH before the War, when you realize this, it sort of all makes sense & falls into place... The top designer at Daimler Benz, was a guy in those days named Rudolph Uhlenaut, he was also a capable driver, & could engineer a sporting car or a top line limousine equally well...
