Old NOS can capacitors in restoration

I have a lot of old can type capacitors that were never used maybe 20-40 yrs old. I still have them as occasionally I still work on old TVs and radios.
I haven't used any of them yet but I'm debating on continuing to store them. My real question is due to the age is it worth the time to use them even if I try the method of reforming capacitors(keeping the units as close to original) or chuck them and just use something newer?
Thanks
Doug

NO I would not use them it is a waste of your repair time. They may still work somewhat but will continue to degrade and will not be nearly as reliable as brand new caps.
15-20 years from now especially those NOS caps will be even worse while if you re-capped with brand new electrolytics you should be trouble free.

You might check out a website Vintage Components, they have an excellent article on reforming.

If looking original is important to you, then you could try restuffing the cans with modern electrolytics. That way you know that you'll be good for years to come.

Thanks for all three replies. For long term use new would be better. Vintage componet site is nice , free schematics, tech info..I thought about stuffing before..I might do it if the units have open backs were the caps are visible.
Again thanks for you input
Doug
