Hey Guys... look what I picked up today in Denver for free! Any ideas? The radio is working (tube)... TV has no picture.. The tags were scraped off the back. Someone wrote on the back "Del. 5-19-64 MPX installed 5-19-64" So I'm guessing 1963 or 1964 console... Any thoughts? other than not bad for free!

When I get sometime I'll takeoff the back and do some investigating...

Looks like a '64. Is the amp SS or tube? You are lucky it has a MPX decoder installed. Most do not like mine. Take some pics of the insides please.

I've got the 1961 version of this with the 23" B/W CRT. Mine is full tubes.

Yours probably is, also. It's to early to be an astrosonic, I think.

You should move this topic to the B/W section.

Looks like the model with the push-pull 6BQ5 amp.

Nice! I had a slightly older version that I used in the shop for several years, until I ran out of room to keep it. Mine was all tube and the TV still worked; but, it had a weak CRT.

should be nice, easy to work on, vert chassis. don't worry if the fly looks bad, they all do. CRT may test weak but if it does it may still produce a good. Issues tend to be the vert height and vert lin pots. uses a doubler for B+ frequently the big doubler caps will be shorted or open. Has plug in top hat diodes in the doubler circuit. Has a "magic eye" which dims the pic in bright lights. this may fool you if you are looking at it in a dark room as the raster will be dim as well.

I would start by checking or just replacing the doubler caps, one will be easy (the cardboard covered single section) the other doubler cap is part of a 3 or 4 section can that is grounded to the chassis.

I had a persistent hula (very slow wave that moves vertically) too slow for a hum bar. I turned out to be a poor ground connection at the sweep board. The vert chassis relies on compression of the PCB using screws for the ground to the chassis. just clean under and tighten them up if you see this happen.

What a fantastic freebie! I should be so lucky. I'd like at least one black and white theatre, maybe someone in south Florida may have a loose one.

The MPX was likely an after market add on. I've heard that for awhile Magnavox designed their sets so it was an optional feature that could be easily added later if a stereo station came to the owners area.
It might not necessarily be the Magnavox made add on MPX. If it was installed by a non-Magnavox affiliated tech then it could be from another brand.

The way the MPX is set up on those, you cannot just "plug" one in like on some sets. They have to be hard wired and mounted into the chassis(mpx in, L & R out, B+, MPX on/off-mono/stereo and ground, jumper from MPX out to L/R in removed). There is a terminal strip under a cardboard cover on the chassis. No RCA jacks. You can wire one up but probably voided the warranty. More than likely was a maggie unit made for this tuner. The coming pictures should tell.

I have three of those tuners and none of them have the MPX option. It looks like an easy installation. All the connections are brought out to the terminal board. It doesn't look like there's an option for a stereo indicator lamp, but don't quote on that statement.
The tuner itself, doesn't look like anything impressive. My opinion only!

Doesnt the IF have to have more bandpass or something to support MPX??

Your maggi is fairly common and easy to work on. Lots of knowledge and information floating around on that chassis and common issues.

Magnavox actually made an MPX kit to adapt the tuner for stereo. It is actually quite simple to attatch.
