Rescued an unusual System 3

This one's bound for DavGoodlin on Saturday. Not sure what he's gonna do with it but it got rescued from destruction. Kinda neat. 1986 model.

Looks like an Advanced System III. Might use the 214 module. If the CRT looks awful and checks OK this set had auto tracking and the 10 mfd/315 volt cap opens on the rear of the 214. Also, misadjusted screen control can do it to.
Great performer and they were great DXers but those days of analog are gone. Well worth keeping!

Very nice. Pretty sure its a -214 set. IIRC no 9-160 sets had
built in MTS, some had an IF out jack for an adapter.
This will give a great pix. if you get the blue up. I would
even save it for a donor jug.

I had that exact set (minus the jack pack, and missing the top door) until 7 years back. Tossed it in a move. That set had the Onslow power switch:slap it on top to make it go on and off....button sometimes worked too.

Ugh, another epic cabinet design fail for Zenith in my humble opinion.

Once found an even weirder System 3 made in 1985. It had a silver, curved cabinet. It sounded pretty decent from what i recall, and looked pretty unique and futuristic. However the CRT was pretty bad. It has serious color bleeding, so I ended up getting rid of it.

Yeah, the "Panorama" sets, they're common. That cabinet design is Zenith epic fail #1 to me. Oh well, to each his own.

Zenith made the "Panorama" style for years. I've seen them with a CCII chassis, a 9-153 chassis, a 9-160 chassis, and a 9-181 chassis. Zenith also made the "Avanti" style for years. I think that one started out as a 4-tube hybrid and lasted at least into the 9-160 era.

Yep that was it. Found a picture on this very forum.

Like I said, the CRT was going downhill in mine, otherwise I might have kept it just for the weird look it had.

Speaking of wacky styling, check this out http://allentown.craigslist.org/atq/4984867339.html it belongs on the Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin talk show set

It's right near you, Philcophan

This will be an keeper as is my 1988 System 3 monitor. This will look great with the Allegro Stereo and plug into the tape in/out

I have dropped off many of the post-1990 BPC Zeniths at the e-recycle

These need to be sitting on Shag Carpet to look their best.

That style I like. It isn't a "must have" for me, but I like it. Unlike the Avantés, I haven't seen one that is yellowed.

That set was always one of my favorites. I ordered one & the boss
got pissed off. Thought he would get stuck with it but I sold it in a few weeks. I kept on replacing it & sold abt a dozen of em. He was still pissed !

The big rarity from the mid 70's is the Avanti with pop up Allegro stereo
& matching SPKRS. Never sold one of them. Also had a stainless steel
25" tin can I have never seen.

Damnit! If you're coming to the Lancaster area again, how about that adult beverage on offer from me?
