trashed flat chassis
picked up a flat chassis zenith yesterday.maybe i should say a trashed flat chassis zenith.no back.yoke.tripler,focus block, transisters etc.basically a cabinet and a crt.looks like it was used for parts?crt tested very weak.never saw a zenith crt test that bad before,so i was skeptical.i warmed it up but still tested weak.the only left to do was to jig it up in a set to take a look.it went in a sylvania gt matic because of the ease to change out.we did a million of these swaps in the shop.when i powered it up,i was delighted to find a very bright, sharp, beautiful picture!tested my nib rca crt and it tested excellent.retested the zenith and it again showed it was bad.i am watching it and the picture is fantastic!yet is tests bad.this crt is like new.green label zenith crt 25vdmp22.the gt matic is looking great with this throwaway crt.retested after two hours of watching time and it came up but still tests weak.
will post pictures later |

I'd at least keep the CRT and chassis....There will never be new delta-gun CRTs made so we should treasure those that remain. You never know when chassis parts can come in handy, and that VRT could be used elsewhere...say to power a tube set.

Even on a cell camera it looks good Ron. I have never had even a weak Zenith CRT either but when my Heathkit CRT tester shows low emission, its never good.
I got the green label Zenith 25VBQP22 installed in the Zenith Avanti w/tambour doors that had the necked CRT. No vertical no sound, so the 24 volt source is down. Its a 25DC56 chassis and I have a spare. Of course I changed the HV hold-down (22-5001) caps before I fired it up.

I'm pretty sure my flatty has that CRT but with a red label. The label is pretty hard to read, lots of spotting. |

those screen shots look pretty good for the tube to be bad/weak. I've yet to see a bad Chromacolor tube as well, altho my 1975 CC2 tube is a tad slow. When you turn it on, green is the predominant color for like 15 seconds, than all is normal. . I haven't ever put it on a tester, as my B&K conked out.

i dont think tube is bad.no way is this crt even weak!it is sharp, all guns look even and the picture rivals any crt i ever seen.still tests weak but dave brought over his tester and it tests like new.my tester is good,we used his and mine to check 9 crts and all were the same except this zenith

One thing with color jugs is if the guns degrade at the same rate
the pix will remain good with some possible bleeding issues. I only saw one 25" CC CRT in a flat chassis that looked weak. It was in one of Maynards infamous bars running 18 hrs a day for ten yrs. Of course we had to pull the set for major work. The boss pulled the metal back & it slipped. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ! We had to give them a jug. 73 Zeno LFOD ! |
