RCA TK-12, TK-15 & TK-31 cameras at NBN-3 Newcastle, NSW Australia

G'day all.

As a follow up to my post on QTQ-9's RCA broadcast gear article in RCA Broadcast News magazine 112, here is a post on RCA broadcast gear used at NBN-3 http://www.nbntv.com.au/ Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.

NBN are now celebrating its 50th year on the air and have been airing on the news each week old archival footage from their vaults and I have been seeing some real interesting RCA cameras show up in the footage and also in old photos I've found on state library sites. NBN used for their studios RCA TK-12 and TK-15 cameras and for their remote coverage they used RCA TK-31s.

Here on YouTube are some film clips showing NBN's cameras in operation:

Outside broadcasts of the 60s and 70s

As seen in the clips NBN used TK-31 cameras which were painted grey. Also interestingly until August 1967 they didn't have a remote OB van so during 1962-67 they hired TCN-9's remote OB van outfitted Fernseh KOA cameras for their remote coverage. I wonder if RCA were still pumping out TK-31s in 1967 or NBN acquired used TK-31s retired from some US TV station or unused surplus stock from RCA? Anyways here's some 8mm footage of the famous 1973 James Hardie Ferodo 1000 Bathurst car race, around 2:14 into the clip a NBN TK-31 can be clearly seen:

This station ident features some archival clippings from the 60s which show a couple of TK-12 cameras and a TK-15 camera.

I have also attached some photos of TK-12s in NBN's studios which I got from a library site.

Lastly while on the subject of the early RCA B&W cameras used by Aussie TV stations some other Aussie stations to note that used the TK-11/31, TK-12, TK-15 and TK-60 range in their studios are as follows:
WIN-4 (Wollongong, NSW): TK-15s
CBN-8 (Orange, NSW): TK-11/31s then TK-60s
ATV-0 (Melbourne, VIC): TK-60s
BTV-6 (Ballarat, VIC): TK-12s then TK-60s
TVQ-10 (Brisbane, QLD): TK-60s
TNT-9 (Launceston, TAS): TK-15s
