My latest antique store find. Uses 6AQ5s in a P-P configuration. Big sound for such a little tabletop. So far, only replaced it's main filter capacitor. It still has it's two selenium rectifiers, which haven't been replaced as of yet, but will be soon.

Nice. I worked on one like that (but with an ivory case) in the early 70's.

You ever notice how sensitive the tuners are on this bad boy? With just the internal antenna I get alot, same with AM.

Yes, the one I worked on had excellent sensitivity, where most table models of the era did not. The audio was very impressive too.

I agree, as this is typed mine is playing, 100% hum-free. the 6AQ5s tested marginal on my checker, but the sound is still amazing.

I take it this radio uses two selenium rectifiers in a line driven voltage doubler circuit rather than a power transformer design.

This could start a whole new thread on unique Japanese plastic AA5...sort of...tabletops. When I find it, I have one that may be over 2' long. The Arvin fits the category.

Those Arvins were something and have good sound for what they are. Notice it has separate tuning dials for FM and AM. There was an optional companion unit that looked just like this radio but was an amplifier and speaker only, having I believe, only volume and tone controls. You plugged it into the radio via a cable with the units separated. In those days (late '50's early '60's) before multiplex, some stations were broadcasting stereo with one channel on AM and the other on FM, thus the radio was able to tune the bands separately. This configuration was only used sporadically for a few years and then multiplex came along, and this radio's special raison d'être has generally been forgotten.

There are two, however one is larger than the other. There is a power transformer, this set uses all 6V tubes. (with the exception of a 12AX7, however probably wired for 6.3v)
