I just hung up with him, he's fine, other than a bad cold right now. He knocked over a glass of coke and it spilled all over his computer and needs to take it in to the computer repair guy. He's getting tired of having no computer , so I think it won't be too much longer before he's back online again

That's great news. Maybe we should get him a new puter keyboard for Christmas.

Got to tell you I don't know the guy, but I love his posts. Glad to hear it's just he can't handle his soda.

Good to hear he is fine. I wonder who owes him a roll of bounties?

Shoot, if I had not promised the folks a cheap machine I picked up a while back I could send him a free computer.

He must've been using a notebook type instead of a regular keyboard. You can buy replacement keyboards for under $10.00.
If something is spilled on a notebook, it can be costly, if not fatal.

Even cheaper if you get a thrift shop keyboard.

I had something similar happen in college...With my laptop in on or hibernate mode in my back pack vents up* during a mid-downpour run between buildings on different blocks my back pack became unzipped...I realized when I got there that it got soaked, I quickly pulled the battery out and cussed a bit. A couple of hours at home taking it apart and holding a hair dryer to it got it dry enough to run, but for a few hours it thought it was the year 1978 IIRC...Then all was well.

*If I carried it vents down and it came on it would overheat and unsaved work would be lost.

That makes sense, I'm still a Windows XP desktop guy. I don't like rushing into the newest technology.

Tim, best of wishes for your wife's successful surgery and for a speedy recovery.

Thanks we're getting ready to bring her in shortly. First of two surgeries will be over by the time most of you read this....

I have a Samsung series 3 economy model beater laptop that I would gladly donate. It needs a hard drive and the drivers can be a pain because Samsung has never listed them, I used to download the setup software for a similar model but Samsung changed up their URL's and that software no longer works. The only drivers missing after a full manual setup is for the "fn" keys brightness, volume, etc so you just have to adjust those things the old fashioned way. It does have a large after market battery that lasts 4-6 hours while streaming Netflix.

If anyone is willing to take on the work and pass to someone who could really use it, its yours.

Not sure if I could find the drivers, but as long as the hard drive is a standard SATA drive I've got a few low-ish capacity drives that can hold a windows install (something else I'm able to put on it free) + a reasonable amount of user file space.

Its standard SATA or has an extra PCIE for a SSD if you want to go that route. It has win8 core (I think) coa in the bios, so if you do a proper efi install with an OEM version it should activate with no issue. It did support win10 until threshold 2 when the legacy AMD video just started crashing with no fix or workaround.

Yeah, sounds like I can make that unit work. My newest install disc is Win 7 (I have the license covered), which should work good. I never much liked 8 and 10 was a free upgrade from 7 (last install I did) so 7 is my newest disc.

There are SATA based SSDs too (my main laptop is getting one for Christmas), but decent sized SSDs are too expensive for me to put in a giveaway (almost too much for my main rig).
