Maybe it's an adjustment tool for the pots inside the pencil box area of the CTC5. They were dual pots, the rear one adjusted with a small screwdriver, the front one with a some kind of special tool. Looks like that item would do it.

Again , my bad , I should have included it's diameter , this thing is pretty close to Dime sized in it's diameter dimension , and so it would have to be a huge pot indeed for this to be an adjustment tool for . Just a confounded mystery ...... |

Something I just thought of , It was in a compartment of a tube caddy that also had a degausing* coil , if that gives any possible hints as to it's purpose ?
* I have no clue how to spell "degausing" , but there were two of those and the mystery object in that same compartment .... |

A friend had one of those! I thought RCA would've made one as well.
Was that tool made by GC or Walsco? |

Beats me. Trouble is most techs that used it are dead now.
Reminds me of other special tools in the biz. Remember these ? Inside out socket for Maggies Fork pronged tool also for Maggies Anode lead removal tube for Sony coax HV leads. Square driver for Zenith antennas & tuner gears. Those Motorola transistor screws. The 3 slotted driver for Zenith & others. And last but not least ISO phillips screwdriver set to get out Jap screws that would otherwise strip.......... 73 Zeno LFOD ! |

I tried removing a chassis from a Mag stereo that had those. They were cranked so tight from the factory, I couldn't remove them without the proper tool. I called Mag and it was NLA. The Motorola screws were clutch-head screws. The cheapie Harbor Freight Phillips screw-drivers are fine for ISO screws. /;..................... |

Two of my sets have a pot like that for color temperature and green drive. Adjusting the color temperature is rather awkward with any tool I have; it isn't flush mounted so I just turn it by hand.

Here is a thought. Could it be a part of the tv/radio/phono that has the pilot light? I have a Thomas stereo that when powered up a clear red transparent rod goes back to the pilot light that is on the chassis. Maybe it something along those lines.

A very good possibility indeed !
It very well could be a part of an RCA device , like you say perhaps part of some elaborate dial light rather than being a tool . It's funny , since it was found with TV tools rather than TV parts I automatically thought it had to be a tool , but as you say the very real possibility is that it could be a component rather than an instrument . Hmm , so maybe it WAS a part of something , that the guy kept around to poke & prod at powered up boards as suggested earlier in the thread ? Thank You Popester for presenting an interesting take on the mystery RCA , , , thing . |
