Philips and Miracord 50H turntables

The other day, I walked in a newly opened flea market and discovered two turntables buried under some junk. One is a 2-speed Philips of unknown model and the other one is a Miracord 50H 4-speed model, probably from the early '70's. The Miracord has a Shure cartridge and the Philips has an Audio Technica cartridge. Both units had "make offer" stickers on them and when I asked what she had in mind, she said I could have either one for $5/each. I told her that I'd take both of them and she then said I could have them for $4/each. It's rare to find those kinds of prices today and it's actually refreshing to go in a store, ask the price of something, and not see the smartphone being pulled so they can look the unit up on ebay and then quote me an ebay price.

I haven't checked them out; but, they look to be in good shape. As old as they are, I'm sure they'll need some work.

The Miracord may not need much. It is an idler-drive turntable that releases tension on the idler when the unit is off, so no flat spots. I have one I purchased new in the late 1960's. Still working as good as new.

I love my Miracord 50H! It has a high end Stanton pickup, and I have styli for 78 RPM and the eliptical for LPs. It runs exactly at speed, and treats records gently. I prefer it to my Thorens 125-TD for dubbing to digital files.
happy you found one . I'm going to start looking for another 50, or a 40 with tonearm lift.
