I think what matters most in replacing a speaker is that the impedance and dimensions be the same. IIRC wattage is a rating for the max power input it can handle before distorting or burning out so higher power should be fine as long as impedance matches.

Another thing worth consideration is frequency response of the original VS replacement...The closer the better, but odds are unless you find the exact part it won't match.
This may sound a bit ascinine but I prefer to replace speakers in pairs, if the tweeter in a pair of 2-way book shelf speakers go I try to replace both at once. Unless an exact replacement is available, replacing only one speaker will create different frequency response between right and left channels...Something that annoys me enough to pop for two speakers.

EDIT: One more thing in 2-way speakers as I suspect those are there is a capacitor in sreies with the tweeter...The capacitor's purpose is to block bass and some lower mid from reaching the tweeter. If you drive a tweeter with a decent ammount of bass power it will burn out. If the crossover capacitor has shorted or gone leaky it will stop blocking the path of bass power into the tweeter, and the tweeter will fail....Given you have a bad tweeter and an old capacitor it is likely the tweeter died because the capacitor is bad....I STRONGLY reccommend replacing your tweeter crossover capacitors.
