"Instruct-a-Kit" AA5, Japanese style

Found this little guy at the swap pile at the town dump a couple of weeks ago, and had to adopt him. Brought it up on a Variac and it works (actually pretty well). Tiny beastie -- bet it was an 'interesting' kit building effort.

It seems like all of these mini tube type radios have a similar circuit and parts layout, with one of the IF coils not being in a can. They do always seem to have good performance...the metal can electrolytic seems to stay in better condition longer than the cardboard type many US sets used at the time.

Curious about the value of that 5-tube bracket vs. its cost to produce: maybe it was needed to stabilize the tubes and maybe act as a heat sink in that small case?
