12W6 versus 12L6

Vertical output in my Marconi TV started to flake out after about 10 minutes of operation. I didn't have a 12W6 in stock, but have a couple 12L6 NOS, so I installed one, adjusted height and linearity, and all seems well. Any harm in leaving it like this, or should I track down a 12W6?

Thanks

Max

That's what I'm thinking, I just wonder if the 12W6 has some special features making it more suitable for a vertical output, since they have near identical curves, and this TV uses one of each (12L6 audio out). In any case I'm going to see how it goes, as an experiment.

Hard to say what or why they chose the particular tube, some color sets used the 6JS6 and others used the 6JE6. Very similar in characteristics yet differ in the pin count.

I think RCA refused to.use 12 pin compactron tubes, because they were a GE invention. GE on the other hand used them everywhere possible. RCA stuck with the 9 pin novar socket.

Looking through the various schematics of sets using a similar design, I see that some manufacturers used a 12W6, 12L6, 25L6 and few others! Westinghouse used their own, a 12EN6.
Then theres Muntz, with their own Vertical oscillator, Vertical output reflex circuit using a 12AV5GA. They were really fussy about the brand of tube used. It had to be a GE! Otherwise the vert lin and height couldn't be adjusted right! Also affected the vert hold range!

This is a series string table model from 1958, with a 17" screen and a vertical chassis. If other brands used a 12L6 in this place, I'm definitely leaving it alone, thanks for checking that! That Muntz design sounds clever.
