Using Headphones with an LG 42LK450

My uncle called me with this problem; I haven't driven over there yet to look at it in person but figured I'd post here to see if anyone might know. The TV is a late model LG model 42LK450. His hearing is getting bad so he bought an RCA wireless headphone set with the idea that he could listen to the tv with the volume up while my aunt can listen at normal levels. The headphone base has RCA jacks and the TV has RCA jacks labeled "headphone". Problem one: when he plugs the cables in, the speakers on the TV turn off (like most devices do). Is that switchable via the menu? I walked him through it over the phone but we couldn't find anything. He said he does not see any jacks labeled "audio out" so we couldn't try that.

Problem two is that, when connected to the headphone jacks, he couldn't hear anything from the headphones, either. I really have the feeling I'm going to have to ride over there. (I need to at some point, to pick up the mid-80s GE that this replaced, possibly a Neovision? Can't remember. If it's pre-Thomson I might just have to keep it.) Any advice appreciated, and if we figure it out I'll at least post that here, to help the next guy.
