Problem with Pioneer LD-660 Laserdisc player

I have a Pioneer LD-660 laserdisc that i'm having a problem with. It powers up but when you push play, the play light blinks but then goes out and then nothing. The disc isn't spinning from what i can tell. If you push play then FF quickly you can hear the laser mechanism move but the disc still doesn't spin. I know this isn't a top of the line player and is as bare bones as they come but i have it and would like to get it going if possible. For those not familiar with this model it is one of the old white top loader 2nd generation players from 1981. I've been told that these will play just about any laserdisc you can throw at it even ones the newer players would reject and is why i want to get it to play. Any idea's on what to check first would gladly be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm going from experience with a slightly newer Sony unit but I seem to recall if the spindle motor stalls for whatever reason it aborts play. The only thing I can think of that comes to mind is caps in the motor driver circuit being unable to handle the initial spinup load.
