Beautiful Wards Airline....8-Mega Bands

Thrift Store find from a few months ago, pretty good condition but it's missing the front cover. The pleather is in great condition and it looks really nice overall. Model GEN 1483 A. Back compartment also includes a battery tray with a little rust, cord and earphone still in the plastic wrap. Very heavy without the batteries and solidly built.

Very nice radio!

I like these multiband sets from this era and yours is a nice example. I like Montgomery Wards items since they are not made anymore so your radio had double appeal!! I have a Wards boom box from about this same era I would guess. It is AM-FM-SW and cassette.

Thanks Gilbert, the thing is fairly heavy, probably around 18-20 lbs. I'm thinking it's around 1980 (give or take a few years) vintage by the Wards Logo. The antenna is reallly cool, it pops out of the handle on the left side. I don't remember the local Wards having anything like this when I was a kid, our store mainly had private labeled TV's and other junk. Some of their stuff was actually pretty nice but our store didn't seem to carry any of it.

Hi BY,

I recall years ago going thru Wards and seeing a few neat items like your radio and the boom box I have. This was probably around 1982 or so, and I wanted a boom box but I wanted it to have short wave. Wards had a real nice looking one. Had the same logo as your radio. My dad bought it for me but the tape recorder had a problem-the audio levels would fluctuate sometimes as it recorded. Took it in a couple of times to try to get it serviced but they couldn't find the problem. Sadly, I turned it back in and got a nice Sony. But last year, I found a nice example on Ebay and bought it. Cleaned it up and it works great. I have it on display on a shelf. It's interesting to see the various Wards radio items that show up on Ebay. Apparently, there were quite a few thru the years.

That's cool how the antenna pops out of the left side handle. It appears to be very well built, I bet it's fun to DX with this set. Too bad Wards is no more. Happy listening!

Gilbert
