JVC CX 610 portable TV

Hello everyone.

I recently obtained a JVC CX 610 portable color TV dated December 1980.

While there were many small portable TVs made back then and this may look like just another, one thing that surprised me is that this has quite a few features that would have been very rare on even high end TVs back in the day. Like the duel input and out put RCA Video jacks. The picture on this CRT is among the best I’ve seen for this size.

With the quality of this unit and being that it is dated December of 1980, JVC could have marketed and sold this thing for the next 25 years and it still would have been a top end portable CRT all the way up until the end of analog broadcasting. Small portable CRTS made in the late 90s and early 2000s couldn’t hold a candle to this thing.

Anyone else have any experience with these units or anything to add? I think they are quite rare and read somewhere that they may have been used in a professional capacity for some broadcasting Company’s.

I have one of these with very low hours. I had to re-cap the entire thing, especially the video input and color processing section. They are very similar to the 5" professional color monitors JVC made during the same era.

If it has tuners almost always a consumer set. Big exception is early
Sonys. Jacks started to show up on small sets first for use with
VCR's & cam-corders.
Almost all later 5" sets were built by Gold Star or Emerson/Orion.
They were built to a low price so no where near the quality of the
big Jap 5". Flip side to that is they became very common. Older
5" like yours were very high priced so rare.
A very nice set

Looks a lot more modern than 1980.

i briefly opened it up to take a look and I did notice a few caps that had a bit of the green corrosion on the leads. Unit works fine, but I suppose it would be a good idea to replace those before they start causing problems.

I ended up recapping my set because the leaky defective caps were causing issues with DC restoration and colors shifting for no reason. Once it was recapped it produced an even better picture.
