Eico 955 "in circuit" capacitor tester anyone?
Just wondering if anyone has had experience with or uses the Eico 955. So far I haven't found a real practical use for the instrument. Reason being is this old stuff we mess with tends to have leaky caps. That is why the old leakage testing "eye tube" testers are so popular right now.
So the Eico can indeed test for opens or shorts in circuit GIVEN the correct set of parallel conditions. LOL! How often will I really put that to use? I think you almost have to cut a leg of a cap and do a rated leakage test and check your value with a DVOM. The old testers including the Eico can give a capacity value if you are lucky enough to have one with all bridge circuitry in premo condition. So why not grab the more precise digital unit. It's all about the right tools they say. But somewhere I heard that these Eicos' are really useful for some particular thing. I want to say I read the shorts test is good for power supply electrolytics. Perhaps so. A quick test maybe to check out a really old set to see if there is any use in putting any AC at all to it...
