Radio in it's infancy - a '22 Deforest crystal radio

I just got an offer to a trade for a very primitive 1922 Deforest Wireless System "Everyman" radiophone crystal receiver and I went for it. I always wanted some type of Deforest set in my collection and a small set like this is perfect. It's complete with plug-in coil and an ancient pair of Western Electric headphones in the storage slot. The set is complete and functional with a nice instruction card under the lid.

Nice find, that's a sweet piece of history. Any more pictures of this beauty?

Thanks. I have to do a little more detailing on the interior of the set including those old Western Electric headphones.

Thank you. It's really primitive and that's it's charm. It was made available in January of 1922 which was about as early a home radio receiver can get. It costs about $25-$30 which was not cheap at the time, but less expensive then a tube set. For instance the 3-tube Westinghouse RC with tubes and a Vocarola speaker would've cost about $180 at the time. Within a couple of years though the tube sets became reasonably priced and crystal sets became a mere child's toy.

I finally got a nice pair of proper Brandes Superior headphones to go with the set. These are what was supplied with the set when new.
