New movie OTH channels.
The Milwaukee area just gained two new DTV subs. 12-2 and 18-2, this last weekend.
One is called "Movies" on 12-2. It was on for a while, but it was a real weak channel. No one seemed to receive it well, so they moved it to 12-2. It comes in great now! The other is "Get TV", which I never heard of. It's on 18-2. Both channels never had a sub-channel, until now. OTH is really giving cable and satellite a run for their money now. |

And there's all this buzz lately about the death of broadcast television. Let me tell you, there's some solid money in squeezing your video bitrate and running some data streams in the margins in nearly ALL markets. We may be approaching the death of locally originated programming (affiliate stations) but I highly doubt we'll reach a point where you can't get at least two out of the big 3 OTA with an indoor antenna.

I first noticed GetTV back around February. http://www.videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=260718
'Movies' a bit earlier and now we also have 'The Works'. Overall I'd say the number of OTA channels has doubled in the last couple years. |

Here in Lansing we get MeTV on 47.2 and Antenna TV on 10.3, both play old shows 24 hours a day.

Locally originated television programming has been dying a slow, agonizing death for years. There are a few cities that have locally-produced shows on network affiliates, but they are few and far between. The programs now airing on network affiliates during times when the networks are idle, for the most part, are infomercials and syndicated talk shows. Infomercials were originally intended to fill in time periods local stations could not sell to advertisers; the same goes for syndicated talk programming. The only locally-produced TV programming on most stations today is the local news at 4, 5, 6 and 11 p.m. Eastern time. The only alternative to talk shows and infomercials would be showing test patterns between network shows, but I seriously doubt the viewing public would go for that; besides, infomercials, particularly paid infomercials, generate revenue for the TV stations on which they air, so most stations nowadays jump at the chance to show them every chance they get.

With an indoor OTA TV antenna, I can get GetTV on a subchannel of Cleveland's Univision affiliate, but not on cable (Time Warner in my area). The same goes for ThisTV, which is carried on a subchannel of Cleveland's CW network affiliate. Can't figure out why the cable doesn't carry those subchannels; after all, Time Warner does carry all three subchannels of the PBS affiliate, as well as Bounce (?) on a subchannel of the MyTV station. I thought there was an FCC rule stating that if a cable system carries an area's local channels, it must also carry, with no exceptions, those stations' subchannels.

I love the idea of showing a test pattern ! ! ! It would be all over twitter and facebook ! ! Millions would be asking "what was that" ! ! Love it ! Each PBS station produces some type of local programing all the time, News, for one, but in each city they cover local cultural stuff, and some of it is rebroadcast to other pbs stations. NOVA is made in Boston, NBR I think use to be made in NJ, now I think possibly Florida, I don't know for sure it's a CNBC show source now.... As for the infomercials, they are a advertisement for a high dollar product that has the need for demonstration, and during the long show sales generally are higher than the 30 second spot...... I watched twice now, the 70's music CD thing with Donny Osmond they had sooo many video clips of the bands I listened to during grade school..... WOW did they have long hair back then ! ! ! I thought Glam Metal bands had the hair ! ! Yah, I'm the kinda person who watches those 30 minute commercials..... Funny thing, Once I was watching a PBS thing about tv in other countries, and I wanna say it was England, where all commercials were restricted to running continuously one after another from say 4am to 7am, and I thought that was stupid.... Who would watch that....? But I bet there are people who would..... As long as they can make some money at it, OTA tv will be around........ And as long as they run retro stuff, the growing old fart age range, who spend less time on itty bitty screens, and actually prefer non-mobile screens, (us) will be watching..... The content has already moved to accommodate the devices associated with the user to a large extent. Just a little money shifting shake out left..... .
