Sony 5-307UW vertical stretch / fold over issue - Please help! :(

Hello, everyone,

About while back, I found a Sony 5-307 for 10 bucks in really nice physical condition. However, I quickly found out it didn't work... I recapped the sweep board, and now I have clear sound and a 'picture.' However, the picture is way too tall -- stretched to the point you can easily see the scanning lines and also folded over.

Please see attached pictures.

It was obvious someone else worked on the set before I got it, as there were a couple of replaced components (possibly incorrect values...) and an *added* capacitor from ground to the one of the terminals of the vertical coil on the yoke. Removing this seemed to make the issue better, but not correct. I guess he/she was trying to fix the same problem at one point, but it looked like guesswork. It also seems there may be a missing component from the sweep board, as I see two holes in the sweep board where it seems there should be something (see final photo)

I can't seem to find a service manual or schematic, so I'm flying blind. Any of you guys that work on these sets have any advice?

Thanks in advance for your help.

IIRC I have the Sam's. If I have time I'll post the vertical section later.

If its got fresh solder assume its bad, wrong value, backwards,
touching something or maybe a solder splash. Also watch the
controls, they break real easy.

When we got sets in that had been worked on, usually shotgunned
nobody wanted to deal with them. You rarely could get a
honest story from the customer either. You didnt want to
bad mouth another shop either. We had excelent relations & wanted
to keep it that way.

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't look like a whole lot has been done, but from what you say, it looks like it's going to be impossible to fix without the service manual. Does anyone have a copy of one on here by any chance?

All controls seem fine, even internal ones, as they all do what they are intended to do.

My sam's is for a 5-303W, but may be similar enough to be helpful.

They're a lot different. I have the schematic for his. I can take some pics of mine later. Sony made quite a lot of changes between the sets.

Hello, guys,

You are very kind to post schematics and parts placement on here for me. I'm sorry I haven't checked back on this thread to tell you that I bought the SAMS manual from their website for this TV. Sorry that you spent time scanning things for me... This week was crazy busy and I didn't have time to check my thread.

I found a few misplaced parts tonight (a 10uF capacitor where a 30uF should be) and also a resistor someone added to the sweep board.

Changing these corrected the problem, and there is now a watchable picture. However, it is shifted to the left quite a bit. I'll post some pictures later when I have time. I can mess with the horizontal hold to shift the picture right and get rid of the blank space, but then the picture becomes distorted and is on the brink of losing sync.

It's a lot closer to being fixed, though! Thanks for all your help.

There are probably centering rings on the CRT neck, try those.

Next step is to replace the 'lytics in the hoz phase, osc & drive.
Do a few at a time & test. 99% of the problems were
dirty controls, tuner, & bad lytics even 40 yrs ago when
they wernt so old. That goes for all early SS sets be it Jap or US.
