Did you try jumpering that 1.2 ohm heater resistor (R704)?

Thanks for the info zeno. I might try that, but I may just leave well enough alone.

@old coot88 I did try that, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

If increasing the filament voltage didnt help it almost proves it is NOT
a weak CRT.
BTW For basket cases on older solid state sets with an open core FBT you
could add a winding to the filament by wrapping it around the core once.
If you do it use a scope to be sure not to increase the P-P more than abt
25%. We did this to get a set picked up & at least get the estimate
charge. Often they would get a year or two out of it & delay what was once
an expensive replacement.

OOPS !
Forgot. Try adjusting the G-2 up or down a little. It can effect the
grey scale some.

Horiz smearing is the clue. Your CRT is bad. It's very typical for Sony CRTs to go soft after 5-6 years. A crt checker will confirm.
